South Indian cinema lost one of its brightest stars this week as veteran actress B. Saroja Devi passed away at the age of 87. Fondly known as the “first female superstar of Kannada cinema,” she peacefully breathed her last in Bengaluru on July 14, 2025, after battling age-related health issues. Her passing has deeply moved fans and film lovers across India’s southern states.

A Career Spanning Six Decades

B. Saroja Devi’s journey in cinema began at just 17 with the Kannada classic Mahakavi Kalidasa in 1955, quickly followed by the Tamil hit Nadodi Mannan opposite M.G. Ramachandran in 1958. Over more than 200 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, she became a household name. She holds the rare record of playing leading roles in 161 consecutive films from 1955 to 1984—a testament to her unmatched popularity

Her screen presence alongside legends like Sivaji Ganesan, N.T. Rama Rao, and Rajkumar cemented her status as an icon. The titles “Abhinaya Saraswathi” and “Kannadathu Paingili” speak volumes about her expressive acting and grace.

Honours, Awards & Influence

Her artistic contributions were recognized with India’s highest civilian awards: the Padma Shri in 1969 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. She also received the Kalaimamani award from Tamil Nadu and an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University. Beyond acting, Saroja Devi served as vice-president of the Kannada film chamber and chaired the National Film Awards jury—leaving a lasting mark on Indian arts

Though she retired from leading roles in the mid-1980s, she briefly returned in character roles, guided by passion and request. Known for her elegance in sari, jewelry, and style, she inspired trends in the 1960s .
